Activities in Bali

Sooo Many Choices of Activities in Bali!

It is honestly difficult to know where to start when listing activities in Bali as they range from Bird-watching Walks and Balinese Cookery courses to Downhill Cycling tours through Bali’s heartland and the ever-popular surfing as well as world-renowned golf courses. You can study puppetry or make your own batik sarong, learn the Balinese gamelan (xylophone) or try Balinese dancing.

Activities in Bali include whitewater rafting, and horse-riding on the beach or through the rice fields. Several companies offer Daytime and Dinner cruises. Watersports abound: Wind-surfing, para-sailing, banana-boating. There are also the Bird and Reptile Parks, Safari Park, and Butterfly Park.

Bali has several monkey colonies. The most famous is found in Monkey Forest at the southern end of Ubud. If you visit, please be aware they are very used to humans so hang on to your hats and sunglasses!

You can climb mountains (Mount Batur is on my list) and visit volcanic crate lakes; walk through stunning rice terraces in Tegallalang and Jatiluwih (actually a World Heritage Site). There are innumerable natural hot springs to visit, some of which are said to have healing properties.

Relaxing in Bali

These days Bali is the spa capital of Southeast Asia with many hotels boasting their own spas and many independent spas throughout the island. I personally like Bodyworks Spa in Seminyak. So there are also some less-than-strenuous activities available in Bali – just go ahead and indulge yourself: treatments for jetlag and sunburn are usually available!

Another of the most popular activities in Bali is shopping! Bargaining is a way of life here (although don’t go overboard, it’s not worth losing something you really want), whether it’s for handicrafts, furniture, paintings, stone and wood carvings, fabric and soft furnishings, clothing, jewellery; whatever you need, it’s here in Bali. There are many cargo companies, too…

But perhaps the most enjoyable and educational activity of all is to learn about and experience Balinese culture. Deeply rooted in daily activities, ceremonies (such as tooth-filing) to mark each stage of this life can be witnessed all over the island. Visits to beautiful and spectacularly located temples are within 1-2 hours of most hotels in Bali. Bali’s most famous temples are Tanah Lot on the west coast, and Uluwatu right down south; most people visit them at sunset for great photographic opportunities.
