2024 Divemaster Internship Programme

PADI Divemaster Internship for Indonesian Citizens

The Indonesian Archipelago – including our beloved Bali – contains a stunningly diverse underwater ecosystem. Fed by the plankton-rich waters of the Indo-Pacific, it creates the world’s richest marine bio-geographic zone, with diving to suit every level of ability and a myriad of interests.

With such amazing diversity, it is unsurprising that new, pristine, diving locations are discovered almost daily. New destinations bring new dive opportunities which drive new dive operators to expand access to these incredible locations. Rapid expansion in the number of dive businesses creates an ever-increasing demand for well-trained professional dive staff.

Recognizing this demand, AMD-B believes there is a very real need to encourage the local community to join and work in this expanding industry. In 2012, the company took its own steps to encourage this participation and pledged to run an annual “11 Month PADI Divemaster Internship Programme for Indonesian Citizens”.

A maximum of four coveted Intern positions are made available each year. This ensures each intern receives individual and personalized training, as well as the 1-on-1 attention required to complete this extensive programme.

AquaMarine Diving – Bali is now seeking applications for the 2024 Internship.

A senior PADI Instructor has assigned as a mentor for the duration of the Internship. The mentor is also part of the team that trains the intern from Open Water Diver, all the way through the courses to PADI Divemaster.

AquaMarine’s Senior PADI Instructors have been working the Indonesian waters for many years and know the local dive industry intimately. They are dedicated to passing on this expertise to the “next generation” of Indonesian scuba diving professionals.

Within 6 months, each intern will have achieved the PADI Divemaster certification. Then the real work begins in starting to operate as Dive Guides for visiting divers under the supervision of AquaMarine’s senior staff. Through a steady process, they gain experience and hands-on knowledge of their responsibilities which builds a solid foundation for their future professional careers in one of the world’s fastest growing industries.

AquaMarine is committed to, and firmly believes that it is vitally important to provide their interns with top quality guidance, and train them to become well-rounded, safety- and customer-oriented Divemasters, ready to be employed here in Bali or elsewhere in the country.

In 2023, AquaMarine’s 12th year of the programme, two interns, Abi (West Java) and Mardia (East Sulawesi) were accepted onto the Internship which they passed with flying colours. These two young people see a new horizon in their lives as diving professionals who have discovered a passion for introducing divers to Indonesia’s underwater world.

If you know any young Indonesians who would be suitable candidates to join AquaMarine’s award-winning dive team by being part of the ‘2024 11 Month PADI DM Internship for Indonesian Citizens Programme’, please ask them to e-mail HRD-Dive@AquaMarineDiving.com for more information.

Application Deadline: 31 October 2023. Programme runs 08 January – 30 November 2024. Must be able to: Speak English, swim, and be available for interview in Bali.

2023 PADI Divemaster Interns

Introducing AMD-B’s 2023 Zero-to-Hero PADI Divemaster Interns

Welcome to AquaMarine Diving – Bali to our two 2023 Interns!

Everyone in AMD-B is delighted to welcome Mardia (Mar) and Abisha (Abi) into the AquaMarine Team 🙂

Our annual 11 Months Internship Programme is one way in which AMD-B ‘gives back’ to the dive community by raising the quality of Indonesian Dive Guides.

For 2023, our PADI Instructor Ketut Sumitra (Mitra) will be their Mentor; what a great start to their dive careers!

Mardia is from Makassar, South Sulawesi; she has a degree in Aquaculture. Last year, Mar finished her coral restoration internship in Gili Air and was accepted as an exchange student at the faculty of Marine Science and Technology of Tokyo University. Her dream job is to work in marine conservation.

Abisha is 21 years old, comes from Bogor in West Java, and has a degree in Marine Science. Abi was previously an intern at the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC) here in Bali, where he gained more knowledge about ocean and conservation. His hobbies are diving and photography.

As with all past participants in AMD-B’s annual internship: After completion, Abi and Mar might stay with AMD-B (assuming we have vacancies) or move elsewhere to share their new-found knowledge.

Previous ‘graduates’ have worked in resorts and liveaboards throughout Indonesia – from Pulau Weh in the far west, through to Wakatobi Dive Resort, Komodo National Park, and in Raja Ampat in the east; others stayed in Bali (most of them are now PADI Instructors!). Some returned to their studies; two doing so overseas.

We look forward to seeing Mar and Abi progress through the PADI courses up to Divemaster, and then gain experience with some of Indonesia’s most sought-after PADI Professional Dive Staff here at AMD-B.

A Final ‘End of Month’ Report from Dhona, AMD-B’s 2022 Zero-to-Hero PADI DM Intern:

“Officially on my last month as a Divemaster intern in AMD-B. The thing on my mind now is just to make sure I maximize every opportunity that I have. These 7 months are just amazing experience for me, like a dream come true. From my first breath underwater, I knew that I want to do scuba diving everyday. And it was not an impulsive decision for sure. I had fun. In this internship, I work everyday but I also have fun and learn a lot of things everyday. I met hundreds people, heard stories from them, shared a lot of things, did 200 dives, laughed everyday, and smiled to thousands people.

The title of this program is Divemaster internship, but I learn way more than being a Divemaster. I tried to be active and take care of other people, not only myself. I learn how to be a good dive guide, which means good for the guests and good for the environment. This internship opened my eyes that even I, just one person, can do so much for the environment by consistent little steps.

After this, I’m planning to take a few days break to explore Bali and then work as a dive guide in dive company around Bali, because I feel confident guiding a dive around Bali at the moment. But, I’m not closing any possibilities to be a dive guide outside Bali. My long term plan is just to be able to promote and raise awareness towards our environment especially the ocean, whatever the way is. I can be a dive guide that’s always reminding my guests to take part to protect the environment, or be an environmentalist, or make a research and open people’s eyes about the importance to protect the environment.”
